The yarn label contains a lot of valuable information - if you know how to read the symbols. Take the mystery out of those little symbols on the yarn labels with the information below.
Be aware that the yarn symbols used on the labels are not completely standardized among manufacturers, so the symbol may vary a bit from label to label. If you find a symbol that you cannot decode, just ask the helpful staff of Skein Lane.
Skein Lane recommends keeping your yarn labels in a journal with a sample of the yarn. This way, you will always know the care instructions, fiber content and name of your fibers.
Gauge and Needle Sizes
|

|
Recommended tension or gauge on the needle/hook size indicated by the symbol below.
It represents a swatch knitted in stockinette stitch that is
4 inches x 4 inches, or 10 cm x 10 cm. This corresponds to how tension or gauge is measured in patterns.
The gauge swatch will also show a number of stitches and a number of rows that should be achieved in the 4x4 inch swatch.
These are indicated by a number or sometimes with the abbreviations M or St for stitches or R for rows.
|

|
Indicates the recommended needle and/or hook size for making solid fabric as in a sweater. The needle size is sometimes indicated only with a number. Some vendors only use metric sizes, and others will indicate US needle size numbers.
This needle/hook size is only recommendation. You must adjust for your tension and your project. If you are making a scarf of shawl, you may want to go up a needle size or two for a more drapey fabric. If you are making a hat or socks, you may want to go down a needle size for a firmer fabric.
