DMC Embroidery Floss.....CNNA Anniversary Supplement 1996
DMC Embroidery Floss was introduced in 1897 as DMC was expanding its market to include sewing threads. In the 1830's, DMC was producing more than 2 million yards of fabric each year.
"A Stitch in Time" ....from Stitch and Bitch 2007 Calendar
Industrialization in the 19th century lessened the need for in-home prduction of various hosehold goods, to the dismay of some authorities. Fearing that little girls would no longer know all they should about "domestic science", schools in nearly every district added "Home Ec" to their curricula. Following this development, future housewives learned to sew, embroider, knit, and weave, among other things, not only in their grandmother's laps but also in the school room.
